The Lady In White

“From here you’ll never want to walk alone again…”

                                                                                       – Vivian Pennington-Hopkins

A Gold Hill Park caretaker once drove along the narrow gravel lane toward Gold Hill Pond. The road was very rutted and narrow, bordered by bushes, bramble and forest. He passed a young woman, dressed in a white wedding dress, walking the other way. The misplaced bride proceeded with neither look nor word, seemingly undisturbed by his passing. Once clear of the woman, the caretaker glanced at his rearview mirror. The woman was nowhere in sight. Worried he had forced the woman off the road, the caretaker stopped, then backed his vehicle to search the woods to each side. Still, there was no sign of the bride.

Many believe the caretaker had encountered the spirit of Elizabeth Moyle as she searched for her lost lover and fiancé, Aaron Klein. Aaron was a young miner who had mysteriously vanished not long after becoming engaged to Elizabeth. Another of Elizabeth’s suitors, a thuggish brute named “Big” Stan Cukla, became insanely jealous when he learned that Elizabeth had promised to marry Aaron. It was rumored that Big Stan had something to do with Aaron’s disappearance, and the brutal killing of Aaron’s pet dog.

The passing years have furnished whispered tales concerning sightings of a young man and his dog who continue to frequent the edge of Gold Hill Pond. Perhaps he awaits the return of his long-lost bride, the Lady In White, coming along the lane?

You just may be the next to pass a spirit or two along the lane to Gold Hill Pond.
